70% Baby Alpaca - 20% Mulberry Silk - 10% Yak
50 g / 183 m
Haya is a luxurious blend of 70% Baby Alpaca, 20% Mulberry Silk, and 10% Yak, and by far the softest yarn ever produced by Holst Garn: perfect for babies, very sensitive individuals, and anyone who simply wants to enjoy the softness.
An alpaca is first shorn when it is 2 years old. This cut, together with the finest fibers from older alpacas, is used for Baby Alpaca. The name Baby Alpaca is not related to the age of the animals, but simply indicates how fine and soft the fibers are.
The alpacas that provide the wool for Haya live in Peru. They are shorn once a year during the spring/summer season. Each Alpaca produces about 2 kg of wool, and 15-20% of this is Baby Alpaca.
Silk is one of the oldest and most exclusive textile fibers.
Mulberry silk is the finest among natural silks. For Haya, only the superior A1 grade is used. Mulberry silk is a soft fiber that also adds shine to the yarn.
Yak comes from the Yak bull that lives in the inaccessible regions surrounding the Himalayas. Here, temperatures can drop to -40 degrees Celsius during winter. To withstand the biting cold, the yak has developed a thin layer of down fibers, which insulate the animals from the extreme cold. The down fibers develop during autumn and winter and are naturally shed in late spring. Yaks are neither combed nor shorn. All the wool comes from the natural shedding collected by the local population.
The wool is then depilated, leaving only the finest fibers. The Yak used for Haya is 18.5/19.5 microns.
Yak wool is dark brown. When mixed with Baby Alpaca and Mulberry Silk, it will result in a grayish base.
This color is present in the collection under the name Oyster.
All the other 23 beautiful colors are dyed over Oyster using solid dyes in shades that, combined with the grayish base, provide a balanced melange effect.
Haya is produced in Peru in a large and renowned spinning mill.
Animal welfare is an absolute priority, and the spinning mills have clear guidelines for breeding, shearing, and the daily life of Alpacas.
For example, it is required that the owner of the animals be physically present during shearing to ensure that the animals are treated with respect.
The spinning mill is certified according to the Oeko-Tex 100 standard, and all wool dyeing is done accordingly.
Water and excess fibers are recycled to the greatest extent possible, which is positive not only for the environment but also for the economy.
The spinning mill also holds RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) and Fair Trade certifications.
It is recommended to work with 3-3.5mm needles or a 3-3.5mm crochet hook.
Gauge: 28 stitches in 10 cm.
Care: Hand wash, cold water, dry flat.
